Come and join artist Jane Stewart who is making a larger than life Nazey, the Essex Serpent. Help us to create the scales and body of Nazey by stamping, printing and sewing, to bring Nazey to life. Nazey is being created for the Walton Arts Festiva taking place from the 17th-20th September 2026.

It was here at the beginning of the twentieth century that the first of only two known Essex sea serpent sightings was Witnessed. One fine morning, Tom Poole, water bailiff and sailor from Brightlingsea was waiting for high tide at Walton Backwater, when a holiday maker, bathing from his boat shouted out that something unusual was swimming towards them. Between their respective boats appeared a creature with a slim neck about four feet long and a head like that of a sheep, but larger. It swam along, turning its head from side to side before it disappeared. It reappeared up tide shortly afterwards, five hundred yards to the east, where it made off into open sea.
