Facekini by Peng Yangjun, Jiazazhi Press, 2022 

This project by photographer Peng Yangjun is about elderly woman wearing facekini on the beach. Facekini is something like a bikini but is covering the face. He says 'Many people may think these images are funny. Sure, humour is a part of my intention, but it’s far from my ultimate purpose. In this project, I try to explore a kind of self-gazing with some surreal, dramatic, and humorous portraits of Chinese. This is very similar to the current situation in China, where society is full of surreal landscapes.’

I picked up this book at Miss Read Book Fair. These masks are hand-made of tattered vest, rag or swimsuits, and even cloth from useless pants and worn by elderly women on the beach to protect their skin - and match their swimming costume.
