'Harvest Field'

This month in the One Work Gallery, we are showing a painting called Harvest Field by Michael Fletcher. Michael was born in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, in 1944, but grew up in South West London. He was taught by Patrick Caulfield at Chelsea School of Art. He lives in Wivenhoe and is a member of Colchester Art Society. ‘My subject matter continues to be primarily the landscape. Observed, remembered or invented, sometimes one picture combining all these elements. Occasionally using the landscape as a stage to enact little dramas.’

Unfortunately, Michael Fletcher is unable to join us for our monthly artists' talks, but has written a statement about the artwork which will be read by Sue Bennett on Wednesday 4th November, followed by a discussion with the audience on the painting on show.

Craft Land by James Fox

Britain has always been a craft land. For generations what we made with our hands defined our identities, built our communities and shaped our regions. Craftland chronicles the vanishing skills and traditions that once governed every aspect of life on these shores.

Travelling the length of Britain, from the Scilly Isles to the Scottish Highlands, James Fox seeks out the country’s last remaining master craftspeople. Stepping inside the workshops of blacksmiths and wheelwrights, cutlers and coopers, bell-founders and watchmakers, we glimpse not only our past but another way of life — one that is not yet lost and whose wisdom could shape our future.

The Nose Book Club mainly reads non-fiction books. Meets once a month on Wednesday evenings. A bowl of soup is served, followed by a discussion on the book.

Mask Painting Workshop with Catalina Carvajal

Join us on Thursday 13th March, from 6:30pm to 8pm for a fun and hands-on creative experience! Paint your own mask inspired by Colombian traditions.

Catalina Carvajal is a Colombian illustrator and mural artist. She was born in Bogota, Colombia, and lived in Mexico City before moving to the UK. @catalinacarvajalr. All ages are welcome. Admission is Free, and all materials are provided. (All children should be accompanied by an adult.) Limited to 10 participants.
