Hedgerow Basketry

Hedgerow Basketry: an Introduction to weaving with foraged materials with Shane Waltener
Starting Saturday 14 October, 2.30pm, £12/ £6 per session

Working with plant materials, workshop participants will be introduced to a number of basketry techniques - coiling, twining, plaiting, stake and strand, interlacing - with demonstrations, making, skill exchanges producing a collection of works over the course of three sessions at The Nose.

Shane Waltener is a Walton based artist, author of Practical Basketry Techniques published by A&C Black, co-founder the Walton Flax Exchange, associate lecturer with Entelechy Art and associate lecturer at the University of the Arts London.

Beach Hut People: Author Talk

We are excited to announce that we have published a book called 'Beach Hut People' by Nancy Stevenson, in time for summer 2023,

Nancy will be talking with publisher Eleanor Brown at Frinton Library on the 8th August. She will take us on a journey to discover a little more about the people who inhabit these ‘sheds by the sea’ and the pleasures of a day at the hut. She will share stories collected in beach huts in Frinton and Walton and tell us more about this friendly and welcoming community who have given her a sense of what it is to be a ‘beach-hutter’. Copies of Beach Hut People will be for sale after the event.

Talk by Steven Walker about Kathleen Garnham, Walton’s female golf champion. Walton on the Naze is known for many things; great beaches, the Pier, Fishing, Family caravan holidays, and the Naze which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its Nature Reserves, geology, fossils and rare habitat. But few people realize that there was a Golf Course on the Naze in the period up to the outbreak of World War 2. And probably even fewer people know that the Golf Club was the home base of a World class Internationally competitive female golfer- Kathleen Garnham. The area is prone to erosion by the North Sea and the land occupied by the golf course has long been lost to the sea. As the cliffs collapse drainage pipes used to water the course are often found on the beach.

To close the Beach Hut People exhibition, writer Nancy Stevenson will be sharing stories from her book which is based on conversations with 60 people who own or regularly visit beach huts. All except one of the stories are gathered in or just outside beach huts. She shares tales about people’s experiences and memories of beach huts and explore feelings evoked by a day at the hut. These tales take us beyond the materiality of the hut — past its scant wooden structure. They uncover intangible aspects associated with time spent in a beach hut which create memories that stir people’s emotions and generates positive feelings.

With contributions from Nose friends and family including Walton Flax Exchange and Odes to the Ocean, Tendring Community Writers and Beach Hut People author Nancy Stevenson. If you’d like to bring something to the mix, a cake, food to share, or an activity, then get in touch.
